Introduction
Lieutenant-General Lord Frederick FitzClarence was born on 9 December 1799 and died on 30 October 1854. He was a British Army officer and the acknowledged illegitimate son of King William IV, with his mother being Dorothea Jordan, an actress and mistress of the king.
FitzClarence commenced his military career in 1814, when he was commissioned as an officer in the British Army. During his service, he held the rank of captain in the Coldstream Guards. In 1820, while serving as a captain, he led a small detachment of Guards in support of police officers during the arrest of the Cato Street conspirators, a task that involved some resistance and physical conflict.
He later attained the rank of colonel in the 36th (Herefordshire) Regiment of Foot. On 24 May 1831, following his father's accession to the throne, he was granted the courtesy title of the marquess' younger son. In the same year, he was invested as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Guelphic Order (G.C.H.). His military and administrative appointments included being appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth, and in 1847, serving as General Officer Commanding South-West District. In 1852, FitzClarence was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Bombay Army, a position he held until his death in October 1854.
His heraldic arms consisted of the royal arms of King William IV, modified by the absence of the escutcheon of the Arch Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire and the Crown of Hanover, with the addition of a baton sinister (possibly azure) charged with two anchors (possibly gold).
FitzClarence married Lady Augusta Boyle on 19 May 1821. She was the third daughter of the 4th Earl of Glasgow. The couple had two children: Augusta Georgiana Frederica FitzClarence, born in December 1823 and died in September 1855, and William FitzClarence, who was born and died in 1827.
He had no officially recognized legitimate offspring, but genealogical records confirm his parentage and family connections.
