Introduction
Tanggudai (Manchu: ᡨᠠᠩᡤᡡᡩᠠᡳ; transliteration by Mulin De: Tanggūdai; December 24, 1585 – November 3, 1640) was a member of the Aisin Gioro clan, the fourth son of Nurhaci. He was born on the 4th day of the 11th month in the 13th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (December 24, 1585). His mother was Consort Niohuru. He served Emperor Hong Taiji and was granted the title of Gushan Ezen (a noble title). After capturing the four cities of Yongping, Tanggudai, along with Tuturg and Namu Tai, defended Luan Prefecture.
In the fourth year of Tiancong (1630), Ming troops attacked Luan Prefecture. The Second Prince A Ming did not lead troops to reinforce but sent Baduoli with several hundred men to break through, entering Luan Prefecture at the third watch that night. Subsequently, Ming soldiers used cannons to damage the city walls, causing fire to break out on the city towers. Tanggudai and others abandoned the city and fled to Yongping. After returning, Emperor Hong Taiji questioned him severely. Tanggudai confessed his guilt and requested execution. Emperor Hong Taiji asked, "Since you could not bring your entire army back, what is the point of killing you?" The officials sentenced him to exempt from death, dismissed him from his title of Gushan Ezen, confiscated his property, and took away his dependents.
In the eighth year of Tiancong (1634), he was awarded the third-rank Merged Shangjing. In the fourth year of Chongde (1639), he was promoted to third-rank Zhen Guojiangjun (General who pacifies the country). On September 20, in the fifth year of Chongde (1640), Tanggudai died of illness. During the Shunzhi period, the court posthumously titled him Duke of Fuguo and granted him the posthumous title "Ke Jie" (Virtuous and Pure).
Regarding his descendants, Tanggudai had two sons: the third-rank Zhen Guojiangjun Nie Kesai, whose mother was Fucha; and the second-rank Zhen Gung Jiangjun Muercha, whose mother was Gualjiajie.
