Introduction
Nie Kexi, of Manchu Aisin Gioro descent, was born on October 30, 1601, in the 29th year of the Wanli Emperor's reign, on the fifth day of the tenth lunar month; he died on February 24, 1666, in the fifth year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign, on the twenty-first day of the first lunar month. His father was Tanggu Dai, the fourth son of Nurhaci, the founding emperor of the Qing Dynasty; his mother was the primary wife, Furasa. Nie Kexi was the eldest son of Tanggu Dai and inherited the family noble title. In the fifth year of Chongde (1640), his father passed away, and his younger brother Muercha inherited the title of Zhen Guojun (Prince of the First Rank). Upon his father’s death, Nie Kexi was immediately awarded the title of Third-Class Feng Guo Jiangjun (General Who Commands the State).
During military campaigns, Nie Kexi accompanied Duoduo in invading Ningyuan, and also followed Dorgon in pacifying the capital. He participated in the campaign to drive out Li Zicheng to Qingdu (Chengdu) and other battles, earning military merit. In the second year of Shunzhi (1645), he was promoted to Second-Class Feng Guo Jiangjun for his military contributions; in the fourth year of Shunzhi (1647), he was promoted to First-Class Feng Guo Jiangjun; and in the sixth year of Shunzhi (1649), he was cumulatively promoted to Prince of the Zhen Guo (State Defender). In the ninth year of Shunzhi (1652), he was demoted to Fu Guo Gong (Duke of Support), and later further demoted to Third-Class Zhen Guo Jiangjun. He died in the fifth year of Kangxi (1666), with his death related to matters involving “protest against Ekeqin,” which prevented his son Eting from inheriting his title according to tradition.
Regarding his family, his father was Zhen Guo Kejie Jiangjun Tanggu Dai; his mother was his primary wife, Furasa. Nie Kexi’s primary wife was of the Nara clan, and his secondary wife was also Nara. His son was Eting, whose mother was his primary wife, Nara. This information is recorded in the “Records of the Four Princes” in the “History of Qing” and the related entries in the second table of the “Genealogy of the Imperial Sons” in the same history.
