Introduction

Wu Zongxian (born October 16, 1962, in Taipei, Taiwan) is a multi‑disciplinary entertainer — singer, host, actor, producer and voice actor. His showbiz career began in the 1980s; early on he took part in TTV’s “Five Lantern Awards” duet contest and in 1987 released his first Mandarin album, Is It Only on Nights Like This That You Remember Me (是不是这样的夜晚你才会这样的想起我).

In music, Wu released the album Qixi Rain (七夕雨) in 1990 and When Your Silhouette Quietly Leaves Me (当你的背影默默的离开我) in 1992 for the Singapore–Malaysia market. In 1994 he released his first Taiwanese Hokkien (Minnan) album, True Heart for Heartlessness (真心换绝情); a song from that album was used as the ending theme for the Hokkien TV drama Lotus in the Fire (火中莲). In 1995 he won the Best Male Performer of Dialect Songs award at the 6th Golden Melody Awards for his Minnan work. He went on to release several more albums, including I Will Miss You (我会想你) in 1996 and Pay Attention (留心) in 1997, plus a number of compilations.

Wu is also a prominent variety show host, having fronted well‑known programs such as Super Sunday (超级星期天), Tiantian Lefantian (天天乐翻天) and I Guess I Guess I Guess Guess Guess (我猜我猜我猜猜猜). In 1997 he discovered and signed a then‑unknown Jay Chou and formed the pop group Xiu Bi Du Hua (咻比嘟哇), which released an album titled Xiu Bi Du Hua. Throughout the 2000s he continued hosting television programs and became one of Taiwan’s leading TV hosts.

His acting credits include films such as Crazy TV Station (疯狂电视台, 2019), Mr. Rabbit (兔子先生, 2019) and Gong Xi Fa Cai: Talk Money, Talk Love (恭喜发财之谈钱说爱, 2016), as well as TV dramas like My Chaotic Era (我的胡搅年代, 2017) and Pandora in the Starry Sky (星空中的潘朵拉, 2015). As a voice actor, he has dubbed roles such as Mushu in Mulan (花木兰) and participated in works like Butterfly Dream (蝴蝶梦).

Personal life: Wu married Zhang Weiwei in 1990 and they have four children. His children Wu Ruixuan (吴睿轩), Wu Shanru (吴姗儒) and Wu Zehan (吴则含) have drawn media attention while growing up. In 2021 Wu Ruixuan was detained by police after the smell of marijuana was detected and was later released on bail. One of his daughters married in 2021, and Wu Shanru held her wedding in 2022. In 2024 Wu Shanru announced the birth of her second child, a daughter.

Wu has received numerous awards, including multiple Golden Bell Awards for variety show hosting and various music honors, reflecting his professional standing in the entertainment industry. His career has also been accompanied by some controversies, including incidents involving shootings and legal cases, but his influence in the Mandarin‑language entertainment world remains significant.
