Peter Hemings

Peter Hemings was an American enslaved individual at Monticello, known for his skills as a brewer, cook, and tailor. He was the son of John Wayles and is related through familial ties to Martha Jefferson, the wife of Thomas Jefferson. Peter Jefferson, the father of Thomas Jefferson, was active in the early 18th century, and John Wayles was an American lawyer and planter who lived from 1715 to 1773. Martha Jefferson was the First Lady of Virginia and the wife of Thomas Jefferson, who served as President of the United States from 1801 to 1809.
