Introduction

Toshiyasu Iwasaki (born January 28, 1881 – October 16, 1930) was a Japanese businessman and the founder of Asahi Glass (currently AGC).

Birth and Family Background

He was born in Tokyo Prefecture (now Tokyo Metropolis) as the second son of Yanosuke Iwasaki, the second head of the Mitsubishi Zaibatsu. There are no records concerning his mother’s name or other family members.

Educational Background

In 1891, he graduated from the Elementary School attached to the Higher Normal School (now Tsukuba University Elementary School). Subsequently, in 1898, he completed the Middle School attached to the Higher Normal School (now Tsukuba University Middle and High School).

He then studied abroad at the University of London, majoring in Applied Chemistry. After returning to Japan, he decided to contribute to the development of Japan’s industry by engaging in glass plate manufacturing.

Business Activities

In 1906 (Meiji 39), he co-founded Shimada Glass Manufacturing in Osaka with Minoru Shimada. This was a company that produced glassware. The following year, in 1907 (Meiji 40), he parted ways with Shimada and established Asahi Glass. Asahi Glass was the first company in Japan successfully manufacturing sheet glass.

Burial Site

He is buried at Tama Reien (Tama Cemetery).

Private Life and Family Relations

He had three daughters with his wife, Hachiho, who was the sixth daughter of Roku Takusuke: Yaeko (eldest daughter), Shizuko (second daughter), and Atsuko (third daughter).

Roku Takusuke was originally from the Mi’kaku family, of Chinese descent, and had long been serving as a Tang official in Nagasaki.

Shizuko was adopted by Toshiyasu’s elder brother, Koyata Iwasaki. Koyata’s adopted son, Koyata Iwasaki, married Tadao Hayashido, a grandson of Tōdō Hayashi.

After Toshiyasu's death, his widow Hachiho married Kōtarō Kondo’s fourth son, Hisao, becoming his adoptive mother.

Iwasaki Hisao later served as Executive Director of Mitsubishi Motors.

Among Toshiyasu’s grandchildren is Toshio Iwasaki, a venture capitalist active in the field of venture capital. Toshio is the eldest son of Hisao and Atsuko.
