Introduction

Lin Shilang was born in the Baiyangshan area of Hunan Province and was one of the eighth-generation descendants of the Lin family of Baiyangshan. Together with his brother Lin Shixi, he formed an important branch of the Lin clan, whose descendants later played various roles in China’s modern political and military history.

Lin Shilang had five sons, including his third son Lin Xiepu, the father of revolutionary martyr Lin Yunan, and his fourth son Lin Mingqing, the father of Lin Biao. The Lin family under his lineage was large and widespread, with many descendants active in public life during the 20th century.

In his later years, Lin Shilang lived in a rural area where his family relied on handicraft work for livelihood. His son Lin Mingqing did not engage in farming but instead turned to weaving, eventually leading the family in the textile business, which gradually improved their economic situation.

Through hard work and family unity, Lin Shilang’s branch of the family became relatively well-known in the Baiyangshan region, forming one of the more prominent sub-branches of the Lin clan
