Introduction
Samantha Gwendoline Cameron, Baroness Cameron of Chipping Norton (née Sheffield), was born on 18 April 1971. She is an English businesswoman who served as the creative director of Smythson of Bond Street until 2010. Subsequently, she took on a part-time consultancy role at Smythson following her husband's appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Family:
Samantha Sheffield is the eldest daughter of Sir Reginald Sheffield, 8th Baronet, and Annabel Lucy Veronica Jones. Her parents married on 11 November 1969 and divorced in 1974. Her mother later remarried William Waldorf Astor III, nephew of her own stepfather Michael Langhorne Astor, and had three additional children. Her father also fathered three children with his second wife, Victoria Penelope Walker.
Her birth was registered in Paddington, London. She was raised on the 300-acre estate of Normanby Hall, located five miles north of Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire, although her family moved out in 1963 before her birth. Samantha Sheffield is a great-granddaughter of Sir Berkeley Sheffield, a Conservative Member of Parliament, and is distantly related to model and actress Cara Delevingne through this lineage. Her maternal great-grandfather, Sir Bede Clifford, was a descendant of King Charles II. Her great-grandparents included the writer Enid Bagnold and Sir Roderick Jones, head of Reuters. Through her ancestor Sir Robert Sheffield, 4th Baronet, she is a fourth cousin of Pamela Harriman, wife of Winston Churchill’s son, Randolph Churchill. Cameron’s family owns Sutton Park, a large estate in Yorkshire linked to the ancestors of Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Education:
Samantha Cameron attended St Helen and St Katharine school in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. She completed A-Levels at Marlborough College. She then studied Fine Art, initially completing an Art Foundation course at Camberwell College of Arts. Subsequently, she studied Fine Art at the School of Creative Arts, part of the University of the West of England.
Marriage and Children:
She married David Cameron on 1 June 1996 at the Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury in East Hendred, England. David Cameron served as Member of Parliament for Witney from 2001 and was Prime Minister from 2010 to 2016. Together, they have four children:
- Ivan Reginald Ian Cameron (born 8 April 2002 in Hammersmith and Fulham, London; died 25 February 2009 in Paddington, London)
- Nancy Gwen Beatrice Cameron (born 19 January 2004 in Westminster, London)
- Arthur Elwen Cameron (born 14 February 2006 in Westminster)
- Florence Rose Endellion Cameron (born 24 August 2010 in Cornwall)
Ivan faced health challenges, being born with cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy, and died at age six. Florence’s middle name, Endellion, references the Cornish village where she was born during a holiday.
Professional Career:
From 1997 until May 2010, Cameron was the creative director of Smythson of Bond Street, an accessories brand. In 2009, she received a British Glamour Magazine Award for Best Accessory Designer. After her husband's appointment as Prime Minister, she adopted a part-time consultancy role at Smythson. Between 2011 and 2015, she served on the judging panel for the Vogue Fashion Fund, alongside Victoria Beckham, Alexandra Shulman, and Lisa Armstrong. She was an ambassador for the British Fashion Council during London Fashion Week. Cameron became recognized for her style, being included in Tatler’s Top 10 Best Dressed List in 2013 and Vanity Fair’s International Best-Dressed List in 2015.
Post-Prime Ministership:
Following David Cameron's resignation in 2016, she founded Cefinn, a London-based womenswear brand. The brand focused on "trend-free" clothing for women with multiple roles. The name Cefinn derives from the initials of her children (Ivan, Nancy, Elwen, Florence) positioned between the first and last letters of her surname. The brand was previewed in British Vogue in December 2016 and launched in February 2017. Cameron indicated that her family connections aided her in establishing the business. As of September 2025, she announced that Cefinn was winding down due to financial challenges faced by high-street fashion chains.
Charitable Activities:
Cameron is actively involved in various charitable causes. She became a patron for Revitalise in June 2013 and has volunteered for Dress for Success, an organization providing clothing and job interview advice for unemployed women. She held a benefit event for Dress for Success at Number 10 Downing Street in October 2012. Additionally, she participated in the 2016 Sport Relief Bake Off and is an ambassador for Save the Children. Following her visit to Syrian refugees in Lebanon in 2013, she publicly expressed her concern for children affected by conflict.
Public Statements:
She is credited with coining the phrase, "There is such a thing as society; it’s just not the same thing as the state," which has been associated with her husband, David Cameron, particularly in his 2005 Conservative leadership victory speech. Their social circle includes members of the Chipping Norton set.
