Introduction
Kathleen Anne Buhle, born circa 1969 in Chicago, Illinois, is an American author and non-profit executive. She is the founder and chief executive officer of The House at 1229, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C.
Buhle was raised in a middle-class Catholic family. Her mother, Roberta Buhle, worked as a schoolteacher, and her father, James F. Buhle, was employed as a salesman for the Chicago White Sox. She attended Catholic schools during her early education and later graduated from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota with a degree in psychology.
Professionally, Buhle initially worked as a high school guidance counselor and admissions counselor. In July 1992, at the age of 23, she met Hunter Biden, the son of then-Senator Joe Biden and Neilia Hunter Biden, while both were volunteering as Jesuits at a Catholic church in Portland, Oregon. The couple entered into a relationship several months after their meeting; Buhle became pregnant three months into the relationship.
Buhle and Biden married in July 1993. They had their first daughter, Naomi King Biden, born on December 21, 1993. The family relocated to Washington, D.C., where Biden was attending law school at Georgetown University. They later moved to Wilmington, Delaware, and in 1997 purchased an estate with historical significance dating back before the American Revolution. During this period, Buhle's brother-in-law, Beau Biden, resided with them while working as a federal prosecutor in Philadelphia.
The couple expanded their family with the birth of three daughters: Finnegan James Biden, born on September 9, 2000; Roberta Mabel "Maisy" Biden, born in 2001; and a third daughter, date of birth unspecified. The family moved back to Washington, D.C., and rented a house in the Tenleytown neighborhood. During Joe Biden's tenure as vice president and Jill Biden's role as second lady of the United States, Buhle developed a close friendship with First Lady Michelle Obama.
In 2015, Buhle and Hunter Biden separated due to issues related to infidelity, alcoholism, and drug addiction. Buhle requested that Biden vacate the family home on July 5, 2015. She formally filed for divorce on December 9, 2016, and in February 2017, filed a motion to freeze Biden's assets in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The divorce proceedings initially experienced complications but were eventually finalized amicably later in 2017.
In 2019, Buhle reverted her surname from Biden to her maiden name, Buhle. She authored a memoir titled "If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, and Healing," published in June 2022, which recounts her life experiences during her marriage to Hunter Biden and his struggles with addiction.
Buhle established The House at 1229, a women's organization dedicated to aiding individuals in need within Washington, D.C., and serves as its CEO.
Regarding her personal health, Buhle was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2019. By 2022, she was reported to be cancer-free.
She resides in Washington, D.C.
