Joe Biden is an American politician who served as the 46th President of the United States from 2021 to 2025. Prior to his presidency, he was the Vice President under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. His family background is predominantly of British Isles descent, with ancestors primarily from Ireland and England, and a smaller number from France. Of his sixteen great-great-grandparents, ten were born in Ireland, specifically from County Mayo and County Louth. One great-great-great-grandfather was born in Sussex, England, and emigrated to Maryland by 1820. In the final months of Biden's presidency, several family members received presidential pardons.

Biden's first wife was Neilia Hunter Biden, born on July 28, 1942. They married on August 27, 1966, and relocated to Wilmington, Delaware. They had three children together: Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III, Robert Hunter Biden, and Naomi Christina "Amy" Biden. Neilia was considered the driving force behind Biden's successful 1972 campaign for the U.S. Senate, unseating J. Caleb Boggs. On December 18, 1972, Neilia and her daughter Naomi died in a car accident, while their sons, Beau and Hunter, were seriously injured. Biden was sworn into the Senate on January 3, 1973, at the hospital where his sons were hospitalized.

Joe Biden later married Jill Tracy Jacobs Biden, born on June 3, 1951. They met on a blind date in March 1975 and married on June 17, 1977, at the United Nations Chapel in New York City. Jill Biden was initially hesitant about the relationship due to concerns about public scrutiny and her own career priorities. Biden's first marriage produced four children, but the death of his first wife and daughter in 1972 and his son Beau's death in 2015 are notable events.

Beau Biden, born on February 3, 1969, in Wilmington, Delaware, was Biden’s eldest son from his first marriage. He survived the 1972 car accident with injuries and completed his education at Archmere Academy, the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, and Syracuse University College of Law. He worked for the U.S. Department of Justice, served as Delaware Attorney General from 2007 to 2015, and was active in Democratic politics, notably speaking at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Beau married Hallie Olivere in 2002. His health deteriorated due to brain cancer, diagnosed in August 2013, and he died on May 30, 2015, at age 46.

Hunter Biden, born on February 4, 1970, in Wilmington, is Joe Biden’s son from his first marriage. Like his brother Beau, Hunter was injured in the 1972 car crash. He graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in history in 1992 and later from Yale Law School in 1996. Hunter worked at MBNA America, where he rose to an executive vice president position by 1998. His associations, including connections with Ukrainian company Burisma, became a point of political discussion. In 2024, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion and related charges, with the case later receiving a presidential pardon from Joe Biden on December 1, 2024. The pardon covered offenses committed from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024.

Naomi "Amy" Biden was born on November 8, 1971, and died in the same 1972 car accident as his mother Neilia.

Ashley Blazer Biden, born June 8, 1981, in Wilmington, Delaware, is Joe Biden’s daughter from his second marriage to Jill Biden. She attended Wilmington Friends School and has been involved in advocacy and social issues.
