Introduction

Robert Carteret, 3rd Earl Granville, 3rd Baron Carteret (21 September 1721 – 13 February 1776), was an English nobleman and politician. He held the titles of Earl Granville and Baron Carteret during his lifetime.

Born in 1721, Robert Carteret was the son of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville, who served as Lord President of the Council, and Frances Worsley, daughter of Sir Robert Worsley, 4th Baronet. He received his education at Westminster School from 1731 to 1738, followed by studies at St John's College in 1738.

In his political career, Carteret was a Member of Parliament for Yarmouth from 1744 to 1747. In April 1744, he attempted to become the parliamentary candidate for Cornwall; however, he was not successful in this endeavor. Subsequently, he was elected as the MP for Yarmouth in a by-election later that year. Carteret did not stand for reelection after his term concluded.

He married Elizabeth, a French woman, who died in 1766. The marriage did not produce any children.

Carteret inherited extensive territories in the Province of Carolina through his inheritance from his father, which also included assets from his great-great-grandfather, Sir George Carteret, who was a Royalist. Following the outbreak of rebellion in the American colonies, Carteret refused to sell his land holdings. Upon his death in 1776, his nephew Henry Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret, inherited the land. Due to the American Revolutionary War, lands owned by those who supported Britain were seized by American authorities. The British government provided partial compensation for these losses.

There are no records of specific details regarding Carteret's ancestry beyond his immediate family.
