Introduction

Richard Lloyd George, 2nd Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, was born on 15 February 1889 and died on 1 May 1968. He was a British soldier and a peer in the peerage of the United Kingdom. From 1945 until his death, he was a member of the House of Lords.

He was the son of David Lloyd George, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Margaret Owen. Lloyd George was educated at Portmadoc School and later attended Christ's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1910.

During the First World War, Lloyd George and his younger brother Gwilym were commissioned as Temporary Second Lieutenants in the 6th Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, part of the Territorial Force. They soon transferred to the 15th (Service) Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, known as the 1st London Welsh, which was part of Kitchener's Army. Lloyd George later transferred to the Royal Engineers and attained the rank of Major. He became an associate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He served again in the British Army during the Second World War.

On 7 April 1917, Lloyd George married Roberta McAlpine (1898–1966), daughter of Sir Robert McAlpine, 1st Baronet. They had two children: Valerie Davidia (1918–2000) and Owen (1924–2010). Richard Lloyd George and Roberta McAlpine were divorced in 1933. Valerie married Sir Goronwy Daniel, an academic and broadcasting executive.

In 1935, Lloyd George married his second wife, Winifred Emily Peedle, daughter of Thomas W. Peedle.

On 1 January 1945, his father was created Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor. Richard Lloyd George then gained the courtesy title of Viscount Gwynedd. Following his father's death from cancer on 26 March 1945, he inherited the peerage and the title of Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor. This inheritance marked the first time a member of his family sat in the House of Lords, as his father had been too ill to do so before his death.

Richard Lloyd George authored biographies of his mother, Dame Margaret, and his father, Lloyd George. His biography of his mother, titled *Dame Margaret: The Life Story of His Mother*, was published in 1947. His biography of his father, titled *Lloyd George*, was published in 1960. The latter was noted by a contemporary reviewer as "a very insignificant book," primarily because it was the first biography of David Lloyd George to include details of his extensive womanising.
