Introduction

Owen Lloyd George, 3rd Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, was born on 28 April 1924 and died on 29 July 2010. He was a British peer who sat as a crossbencher in the House of Lords.

His father was Richard Lloyd George, the 2nd Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor. His mother was Roberta Ida Freeman McAlpine, the youngest daughter of Sir Robert McAlpine, 1st Baronet, founder of Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd., an engineering firm. Owen Lloyd George was the grandson of David Lloyd George, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922. The earldom was conferred upon his grandfather in 1945.

He received his education at Oundle School, where he became featherweight boxing champion. He left school before his 17th birthday to apprentice as a civil engineer with Sir Alfred McAlpine, 3rd Baronet.

In 1942, Lloyd-George was commissioned into the Welsh Guards and attained the rank of Captain. During the Second World War, he served with the 3rd Battalion in Italy from 1944 to 1945. Afterwards, he served with the 2nd Battalion in Germany.

Following the death of his grandfather in March 1945, Winston Churchill ordered that all four grandsons of David Lloyd George in active service be brought back from the war zones to attend the funeral in North Wales. Lloyd-George was in Italy at the time. He was flown to Naples by fighter plane, accommodated at Field Marshal Alexander's villa, and then flown by bomber to England the following morning. He was subsequently transported to North Wales in a Spitfire piloted by a Polish pilot, arriving at Llanystumdwy shortly before the funeral.

He inherited the title of Earl Llyod George of Dwyfor upon the death of his father on 1 May 1968. This made him an active member of the House of Lords. In 1993, he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Dyfed.

The House of Lords Act of November 1999 limited hereditary peers' seats, resulting in Lloyd-George losing his seat in the House of Lords.

Lloyd-George married Ruth Margaret Coit on 8 September 1949. She was the daughter of Richard Coit and Violet Josephine Slocock. The marriage ended in divorce in 1982. They had three children: David Richard Owen Lloyd George, who became the 4th Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor (born 22 January 1951), Robert John Daniel Lloyd George (born 13 August 1952), and Lady Julia Margaret Violet Lloyd George.

In 1982, Lloyd-George married (Cecily) Josephine, Countess of Woolton, who was born in 1925 and died in 2012. She was the daughter of Sir Alexander Penrose Gordon-Cumming, 5th Baronet, and Elizabeth, Countess Cawdor. This was her third marriage and her third marriage to a peer.

Lloyd-George participated in the investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle in 1969, carrying the Sword during the event.

He did not establish a residence in Wales until the age of 63, when he purchased Ffynone, a country house designed by John Nash in Pembrokeshire.

He authored a book of memoirs titled *A Tale of Two Grandfathers*, published in 1999.
