Introduction
Princess Elizabeth of Clarence (Elizabeth Georgiana Adelaide) was born on December 10, 1820, at St James's Palace during the reign of her uncle, King George IV. She was a member of the House of Hanover, the ruling royal family of Great Britain.
Her parents were the Duke and Duchess of Clarence and St Andrews, who later became King William IV and Queen Adelaide. Her paternal grandparents were King George III and Queen Charlotte, while her maternal grandparents were George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, and Princess Louise Eleonore of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.
Elizabeth was the second daughter in her family. She was christened on the day of her birth at St James's Palace by William Howley, then the Bishop of London.
At her birth, Elizabeth was third in the line of succession to the British throne. Had she survived into adulthood, she would have been in a position to become queen instead of her cousin Victoria, had circumstances differed.
Elizabeth’s life was brief; she was diagnosed with an intestinal disease described as intussusception of the bowels. She died at the age of 12 weeks on March 4, 1821. She was subsequently buried at Windsor Castle, in St George's Chapel, on March 10, 1821.
