Introduction
Henry John Brinsley Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland, was born on 16 April 1852 at Upper Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, Mayfair. He was the sole surviving child of Lord John Manners and his first wife, Catherine Marley. His mother died due to childbirth complications shortly after his second birthday, leaving him orphaned at a young age; her daughter, Edith Katharine Mary, died at 12 days old. In 1862, his father remarried Janetta Hughan, resulting in four half-siblings, including Lord Edward Manners and Lord Cecil Manners.
He held the courtesy title of Marquess of Granby from 1888, following his father's succession to the dukedom upon his uncle’s death. His education included attendance at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge.
In his career, Manners served as the principal private secretary to Prime Minister Marquess of Salisbury between 1885 and 1888. After his father inherited the dukedom in 1888, Manners succeeded him as Member of Parliament for Melton, serving from 1888 until 1895. In 1896, he was summoned to the House of Lords by a writ of acceleration in his father's subsidiary title, Baron Manners of Haddon. He became the 8th Duke of Rutland in 1906 following his father's death.
Manners was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment in 1897. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire from November 1900 until his death in 1925. Additionally, he was the President of the North British Academy of Arts at its inception and for many subsequent years. In 1918, he was inducted as a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter.
On 25 November 1882, Manners married Violet Lindsay, daughter of Colonel the Hon. Charles Lindsay. The marriage produced five children; however, the paternity of their two youngest children is subject to speculation, with suggestions that they may have been fathered by other men. Their children include:
- Lady Victoria Marjorie Harriet Manners (1883–1946), married Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey, with issue.
- Robert Charles John Manners, Lord Haddon (1885–1894), who died young after surgery.
- John Henry Montagu Manners, who became the 9th Duke of Rutland (1886–1940), married Kathleen Tennant.
- Lady Violet Catherine Manners (1888–1971), rumored to have been fathered by Montagu Corry, 1st Baron Rowton; she married Hugo Charteris, Lord Elcho, and then Guy Benson.
- Lady Diana Olivia Winifred Maud Manners (1892–1986), allegedly fathered by Harry Cust; she married Duff Cooper, later Viscount Norwich, and had a son.
Henry Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland, died on 8 May 1925 at the age of 73. His successor was his only surviving son, John. The duchess of Rutland died in December 1937 at age 81.
His coat of arms is associated with the peerage title, though specific heraldic details are not provided in the available data.
