Introduction
Henry Thomas Smith-Stanley was born on 9 March 1803 and died on 2 April 1875. He was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Preston from 1832 to 1837. Smith-Stanley was the son of Edward Smith-Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby, and Charlotte Hornby. His elder brother was Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, who served as Prime Minister on three occasions.
Educationally, Smith-Stanley attended Eton College before matriculating at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1821. He later transferred to St Mary Hall, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1826 at the age of 22.
In addition to his parliamentary service, Smith-Stanley held roles as a Justice of the Peace (JP) and Deputy Lieutenant (DL).
On 1 September 1835, he married Anne Woolhouse, the daughter of Richard Woolhouse. The couple had four children:
- Edward Henry Stanley, born 5 January 1838
- Charles Geoffrey Stanley, born 5 September 1839 and died 22 April 1877
- Henry Edmund Stanley, born 27 December 1840 and died 15 November 1867
- Charlotte Margaret Sidney Anne Stanley, born 5 August 1842 and died 26 October 1872
