Morimitsu Hosokawa

Morimitsu Hosokawa (細川 護光, Hosokawa Morimitsu), born in 1972, is a Japanese potter. He is the son of Morihiro Hosokawa, a former Prime Minister of Japan. His paternal great-grandfather is Fumimaro Konoe, who served as Prime Minister of Japan. Hosokawa was born in Tokyo and raised in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Educational background includes juvenile studies in Japan and secondary education in the United States. After completing high school, he attended university in the United States before transferring to another university in Tokyo. His academic pursuits included the study of photography, and he worked various part-time jobs during this period. Additionally, Hosokawa traveled to India.

In 1999, Hosokawa studied at an Iga-based kiln under kiln master Masatake Fukumori. He collaborated with his father on a project in Yugawara. In 2006, Hosokawa established his own kiln. His artistic career as a potter includes holding solo exhibitions, with his first at the Shibunkaku gallery in Kyoto in 2008; he conducted subsequent exhibitions there, notably in 2013. He also exhibited works at the Kakiden Gallery in Shinjuku, Nanohana in Odawara, Mitsukoshi Department Store in Nihonbashi, Tsuruya Department Store in Kumamoto, and Tenmaya in Okamoto, among others.

Further studies under Fukumori occurred in 2014, during which he engaged specifically with Raku ware in Yugawara. In May 2017, Hosokawa, alongside Fukumori, visited the United Kingdom to test clay materials and a newly constructed kiln.

In his personal life, Morimitsu Hosokawa has been married to Ai Hosokawa since 2009. The family resides in Kumamoto and has a daughter.
