Introduction
Sun Suihua was born in 1925 in Shanghai, China. She is the daughter of Sun Ke and a member of the Sun Zhongshan family. Her father, Sun Ke, was a renowned politician in modern Chinese history, and her mother was Chen Shuying. Her elder sister is Sun Suiying. Before 1943, she went to the United States, where she completed her undergraduate studies at Smith College.
Sun Suihua was frequently invited back to China to participate in important commemorative events, including the Xinhai Revolution and celebrations of Sun Zhongshan and Soong Ching-ling’s birthdays. She was received by Chinese political and national leaders, such as Deng Xiaoping. During her visits to China, she also toured places like Nanlang and Cuiheng to pay respects at ancestral sites and donated funds to support the establishment of the Zhongshan Memorial Middle School. Additionally, she donated over a thousand cultural relics and historical materials from her family collection free of charge to the Sun Yat-sen Residence Memorial Hall and the Zhongshan Museum.
In addition to her contributions to culture and charity, she held a painting exhibition in her hometown in 2017. Her family includes her husband, Zhang Jiagong, and one son and two daughters. Her family inherited Sun Yat-sen’s spirit of “universal love.” Sun Suihua and her sister, Sun Suiying, received various honors, such as in 2016 when she was awarded the title of “Honorary Citizen of Zhongshan” by the Zhongshan municipal government, and in 2018 she was recognized by the China Cultural Heritage Foundation as an outstanding individual in the “Passing the Torch — Cultural Heritage Dream Maker” program.
Sun Suihua passed away on April 16, 2021, in California, USA, at the age of 96. Throughout her life, she was dedicated to inheriting Chinese culture and promoting national development. Despite living abroad, her affection for her homeland remained steadfast. Her deeds and contributions are recognized and commemorated both in her hometown and nationwide.
