Introduction
Peter Mark Andrew Phillips was born on 15 November 1977 at 10:46 a.m. in the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London. He is the eldest son of Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, and her first husband, Mark Phillips. As a grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he was the first grandchild of a reigning monarch in over 500 years to be born without a courtesy or peerage title. At birth, Phillips was fifth in the line of succession to the British throne, a position he held until the birth of his cousin William, Prince of Wales, in 1982. As of 2025, he is 19th in the line of succession.
Phillips was baptized on 22 December 1977 by the Archbishop of Canterbury Donald Coggan in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace. His godparents included Prince Charles, Geoffrey Tiarks, Captain Hamish Lochore, Lady Cecil Cameron of Lochiel, and Jane Holderness-Roddam.
He has a younger sister, Zara Tindall (née Phillips), born in 1981, and three younger half-siblings: Felicity Wade (née Tonkin), born in 1985, from his father's extramarital relationship with Heather Tonkin; and Stephanie Phillips, born in 1997, from his father's second marriage to Sandy Pflueger.
For his early education, Phillips attended Port Regis Prep School in Shaftesbury, Dorset, and later Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland, where he was appointed head boy. During a gap year, he worked in Sydney, Australia, for Sports Entertainment Limited (SEL), a company he would later manage, as well as for Jackie Stewart's Formula One racing team. He also represented Scotland in youth and junior rugby union during the mid-1990s.
He graduated from the University of Exeter with a degree in Sports Science. While at university, he played rugby league for Exeter University.
In terms of career, Phillips initially worked for Jaguar as a corporate hospitality manager, followed by a role as sponsorship accounts manager at Williams Racing team. In September 2005, he transitioned to a management position at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh. In March 2012, he became managing director of SEL UK, a sports management company. He has accompanied significant royal events, such as the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration in 2016, organizing the "Patron’s Lunch," which included a parade and a picnic for approximately 10,000 guests.
In 2020, Phillips appeared in a commercial for Chinese company Bright Food, promoting their milk product.
He was involved in the royal funeral arrangements and official mourning for Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. On 17 September 2022, he participated in a 15-minute vigil around his grandmother's coffin at Westminster Hall, and on 19 September 2022, he joined other members of the royal family in walking behind her cortege during her state funeral procession.
Regarding personal relationships, Phillips dated Elizabeth Iorio, an American heiress, for two years and had a brief relationship with Tara Swain, a flight attendant. In 2003, he met Autumn Kelly, a Canadian management consultant, at the Canadian Grand Prix. They announced their engagement on 28 July 2007, and married on 17 May 2008 at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. Kelly was received into the Church of England prior to their marriage to avoid the potential loss of his place in the line of succession under the Act of Settlement 1701, had she been Roman Catholic at the time.
The couple resided in Hong Kong temporarily when Phillips worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland in regional sponsorships. They have two daughters: Savannah Anne Kathleen, born on 29 December 2010, and Isla Elizabeth, born on 29 March 2012. Both daughters are in the line of succession, currently ranked 20th and 21st respectively.
Phillips and Kelly separated in 2019 and divorced in 2021. Following this, he was in a relationship with Lindsay Wallace, which ended in 2024. By June 2024, Phillips was engaged to Harriet Sperling, a pediatric nurse and freelance writer; their engagement was announced on 1 August 2025. Sperling has a daughter from a previous relationship and is distantly related through her father, Rupert Sanders.
Phillips has received several honors, including the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002), Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022), and the King Charles III Coronation Medal (2023).
