He was the son of Sir Robert McAlpine, 1st Baronet, the founder of a British construction firm, and Roberta Ida Freeman McAlpine, who was the daughter of Sir Robert McAlpine, 1st Baronet. Roberta Ida Freeman McAlpine was married to Richard Lloyd George, 2nd Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, the son of David Lloyd George, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922. Richard Lloyd George was a soldier and politician, and Roberta Ida Freeman McAlpine lived from 1898 to 1966.
