Introduction
Gu Wang Zhu Huo (April 30, 1379 – 1428), was the nineteenth son of Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang. His mother was Consort Guo Hui, the daughter of Chuzheng Wang Guo Zixing. He was the first Gu Wang (Duke of Valley) of the Ming Dynasty, reigning for twenty-six years. In the twenty-fourth year of Hongwu (1391), he was bestowed the title of Duke of Valley, with his fief located in the ancient Shanggu County of Xuanfu. Some also referred to him as the Ruyi King. In the twenty-eighth year of Hongwu (1395), his fief was transferred to Xuanfu. In the fourth year of Jianwen (1402), he was re-enfeoffed as the Duke of Changsha, with an increased annual stipend of 2,000 shi of grain. That same year, in June, during the Jingnan campaign, he surrendered jointly with Li Jinglong; this event is historically known as the "Jinchuan Gate Incident."
During Zhu Huo’s rule, he was involved in actions such as seizing people's land, extorting taxes, and killing innocent people. He was executed after being accused by his brother of neglecting to pay respects due to loyalty, which involved the loyal and filial Zhu Ruan. Later, his brother reported that Zhu Huo had seized land from the people, extorted state taxes, and killed innocents; Zhu Huo countered by accusing him of slander, and he was subjected to lingchi (death by slicing).
Zhu Huo secretly conspired to rebellion, was denounced by Ming Chengzu (Emperor Yongle), and he died in captivity in 1428. His family was sent to the capital but was thereafter settled in Fengyang and Luzhou. His wives and concubines included Zhou Shi and Miao Shi. His children included his eldest son Zhu Fuzhuo, second son Zhu Fufen, third son Zhu Fuquan, fourth son Zhu Fuyun, fifth son Zhu Fuzhong, sixth son Zhu Fuxin, and seventh son Zhu Fukun.
