Introduction
Daniel MacMillan (Scottish Gaelic: Dòmhnall MacMhaolain; 13 September 1813 – 27 June 1857) was a Scottish publisher born on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. His place of birth was the farm of Achog, situated just north of Corrie on the Isle of Arran, and he was born into a crofting family.
In 1833, MacMillan moved to London and initially worked for a Cambridge bookseller. By 1844, he decided to expand into the publishing industry. He co-founded Macmillan Publishers with his brother Alexander MacMillan in London. The company later established an American branch, with George Edward Brett sent to open the first U.S. office in New York, following the recommendation of Alexander MacMillan.
Daniel MacMillan married Frances Orridge on 4 September 1850. Frances was the daughter of a chemist based in Cambridge. Together, they had two sons: Frederick, born in 1851, and Maurice Crawford Macmillan, born in 1853. Maurice Crawford Macmillan later became notable in his own right, and his son Maurice Harold Macmillan served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Daniel MacMillan died in Cambridge on 27 June 1857 and was buried in the Mill Road cemetery in Cambridge.
