Introduction
John Elliott was born on October 24, 1773, and died on August 9, 1827. He was a United States senator representing Georgia, serving in the Senate from 1819 to 1825. Elliott graduated from Yale University in 1794 and subsequently returned to Georgia to practice law. Prior to his election to the Senate, he held various local offices within the state.
Elliott was married twice. His first wife was Esther Dunwoody, with whom he had children including Hester Amarintha "Hettie" Elliott (1797–1831) and Corinne Elliott. Hettie became the wife of Major James Stephens Bulloch (1793–1849) and was the mother of James Dunwoody Bulloch (1823–1901), a Confederate veteran during the American Civil War.
Following the death of Esther Dunwoody, Elliott married Martha "Patsy" Stewart (1799–1864), daughter of General Daniel Stewart and Sarah Susannah Oswald. John and Patsy Elliott had four children: Susan Ann Elliott (1820–1895), Georgia Amanda Elliott (1822–1848), Charles William Elliott (September 1824–circa 1825), and Daniel Stewart "Dan" Elliott (1826–1861). Daniel Elliott was a casualty of the Civil War, serving as a Confederate soldier.
Approximately a year before his death, Elliott commissioned the construction of a home at 204 East State Street in Savannah, Georgia. This residence later became known as the Elliott–Huger House. The house was demolished in 1932.
After Elliott's death in 1827, his widow Patsy Stewart Elliott married Major Bulloch, her former brother-in-law, on May 8, 1832. They had four children together, including Martha "Mittie" Bulloch (1835–1884) and Irvine Stephens Bulloch (1842–1898). Mittie Bulloch became the mother of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) and Elliott Roosevelt (1860–1894). Roosevelt was the father of Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962), who served as First Lady of the United States.
Records indicate that in 1820, John Elliott enslaved 115 people in Liberty County, Georgia. By 1830, his estate enslaved 117 individuals.
