Introduction
The Honorable Edward Townshend, D.D., was born on 25 October 1719 in Raynham, Norfolk, and died on 27 January 1765 in Bath. He was an Anglican clergyman active during the eighteenth century. Townshend was the son of Charles Townshend, the 2nd Viscount Townshend.
He received his early education at Eton College before attending Trinity College, Cambridge. He was ordained as a priest in 1743. In 1745, he was appointed as the Rector of Pulham, and in 1748, he became the Rector of Oakley.
Townshend served as Deputy Clerk of the Closet from 1746, a clerical position responsible for ecclesiastical appointments and religious duties at the royal court. In 1761, he was appointed as the Dean of Norwich, a senior position within the Church of England, overseeing Norwich Cathedral and its clergy.
