Introduction

Elizabeth FitzRoy, Duchess of Grafton (née Wrottesley), was born on 1 November 1745 and died on 25 May 1822. She was the daughter of Sir Richard Wrottesley, 7th Baronet, and Lady Mary Leveson-Gower. Her family connected her to notable figures, including an uncle who was the Duke of Bedford.

On 24 June 1769, Elizabeth Wrottesley married Augustus FitzRoy, who was the 3rd Duke of Grafton and had served as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Their marriage took place at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire, England, and occurred three months after the duke’s divorce.

Elizabeth Wrottesley was introduced to the artist Thomas Gainsborough by her uncle, the Duke of Bedford. Gainsborough created a portrait of her, which is currently housed in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

Elizabeth and Augustus FitzRoy had a total of thirteen children, nine of whom survived to adulthood. Their children included:

- Lord Henry FitzRoy (9 April 1770 – 7 June 1828), who became a clergyman. He married Caroline Pigot on 10 September 1800, and they had five children. He is an ancestor of Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick.

- Lady Charlotte FitzRoy (circa 1771 – 23 June 1857).

- Lord Frederick FitzRoy (born 16 September 1774, died young).

- Lady Augusta FitzRoy (1779 – 29 June 1839), who married Reverend George F. Tavel on 19 November 1811.

- Lady Frances FitzRoy (1 June 1780 – 7 January 1866), who married the 1st Baron Churchill on 25 November 1800.

- Admiral Lord William FitzRoy (1 June 1782 – 13 May 1857), who married Georgiana Raikes in 1816; they had two children.

- Lord John Edward FitzRoy (24 September 1785 – 28 December 1856), who served as a Member of Parliament and died unmarried.

- Lady Isabella FitzRoy (circa 1786 – 10 December 1866), who married Barrington Pope Blachford on 11 August 1812.

- Lady Elizabeth FitzRoy, who married her cousin Lt. Gen. The Hon. William FitzRoy on 4 July 1811. She died on 13 March 1839.
