Introduction

Sir Richard Wrottesley, 7th Baronet (19 June 1721 – 20 July 1769), was associated with Wrottesley Hall in Staffordshire. His father was Sir John Wrottesley, and his mother was Frances Grey, daughter of the Hon. John Grey of Enville.

He received education at Winchester College between 1736 and 1738 and entered St John's College, Oxford, in 1739. He did not complete a degree at Oxford but later graduated from Cambridge University, first being admitted to St John’s College and earning a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1756. Subsequently, he was admitted to Queens’ College, Cambridge, and obtained a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) degree in 1764.

In 1732, at the age of approximately 11, he succeeded his elder brother, Sir Walter Wrottesley, to become the 7th Baronet. During the Jacobite rising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, Sir Richard reportedly prepared his tenants and servants to engage in battle as the rebellion advanced through England. However, the engagement was limited to a stay at a local inn, The Bull at Codsall, where he and his men reportedly spent a week.

He served as Member of Parliament for Tavistock from December 1747 until 1754. Concurrently, he was appointed a Clerk of the Green Cloth, holding this position from 1749 to 1754. He also took on ecclesiastical roles, serving as the minister of St Michael’s in Tettenhall.

In 1763, Sir Richard was appointed as chaplain in ordinary to King George III. Two years later, in 1765, he was collated as Dean of Worcester, a position he held for life.

In 1739, Sir Richard married Lady Mary Leveson-Gower, the daughter of John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower, and Evelyn Pierrepont. Sir Richard Wrottesley died in 1769.

His titles and family connections are associated with the Wrottesley Baronetcy and the peerage title of Baron Wrottesley.
