Introduction
Imperial Noble Consort Zhemin (died 20 August 1735) was a consort of the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty. She was born into the Manchu Fuca clan, which was part of the Plain Yellow Banner, one of the banners of the Manchu military and social organization. Her personal name has not been recorded in historical sources. Her father was Wengguotu, who held the position of a fourth-ranking military official (佐領). She had at least one known sibling, a sister who was married to Gioro Yongqing.
During the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1661–1722), she was known simply as Lady Fuca. It is not documented when she first became a lady-in-waiting to Hongli, the Yongzheng Emperor's fourth son. In 1725, she became a mistress of Hongli. She bore him a son, Yonghuang, on 5 July 1728. In addition, she gave birth to a daughter in May or June 1731; however, the daughter died prematurely in December 1731 or January 1732.
Lady Fuca's death occurred on 20 August 1735, prior to her son Yonghuang reaching adulthood. The Yongzheng Emperor died shortly thereafter, on 8 October 1735, and was succeeded by Hongli, who became the Qianlong Emperor. Following her death, she was posthumously granted the title "Consort Zhe" (哲妃) in November or December 1736 by the Qianlong Emperor.
In February 1745, she was further elevated posthumously to "Imperial Noble Consort Zhemin" (哲憫皇貴妃), on the basis that her son was the emperor's first son. Her remains were interred in 1752 within the Yu Mausoleum of the Eastern Qing tombs.
Her titles during her lifetime and posthumous honors include:
- During Kangxi's reign: Lady Fuca
- During Yongzheng's reign: Mistress (from 1725)
- During Qianlong’s reign:
- Consort Zhe (哲妃), awarded in late 1736, a fourth-rank consort position.
- Imperial Noble Consort (皇貴妃), awarded on 24 February 1745, a second-rank consort position.
- Imperial Noble Consort Zhemin (哲憫皇貴妃), from May 1745.
As a mistress, she had at least two children:
- Yonghuang (永璜), born on 5 July 1728 and died on 21 April 1750. He was posthumously honored as Prince Ding'an of the First Rank.
- A second daughter, born on 1 June 1731 and died on 6 January 1732, who died in infancy.
Her life is documented in sources such as the Draft History of Qing (Qing Shi Gao).
