Introduction
George Arthur Maurice Hamilton-Gordon, 2nd Baron Stanmore, was born on 3 January 1871 and died on 13 April 1957. He was a British politician associated with the Liberal Party.
Family Background and Early Life:
He was the only son of Arthur Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore, and Rachel Emily Shaw-Lefevre. His paternal grandfather was Prime Minister George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen. His maternal grandfather was Sir John George Shaw-Lefevre.
Education:
He received his education at Winchester College and later attended Trinity College, Cambridge.
Early Career:
Between 1892 and 1895, Hamilton-Gordon served as a private secretary to successive officials: the First Commissioner of Works and the President of the Local Government Board, both of whom were his maternal uncle, George Shaw-Lefevre.
Military Service:
He was enlisted with the Hampshire Regiment. In January 1902, he transferred to become a captain of the 3rd Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders.
Peerage and Political Roles:
In 1912, upon the death of his father, he succeeded to the title of the 2nd Baron Stanmore. Following this, he held the position of Lord-in-waiting (a government whip in the House of Lords) under Prime Ministers H. H. Asquith and David Lloyd George from 1914 to 1922. Although he did not return to government posts afterward, he served as Chief Liberal Whip in the House of Lords from 1923 to 1944. He also served as a Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords.
Other Responsibilities:
From 1921 to 1937, he was Treasurer of St Bartholomew's Hospital.
Honors:
He was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in the 1922 Birthday Honours, and Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in the 1930 Birthday Honours. Additionally, he was sworn into the Privy Council following the 1932 Birthday Honours.
Death and Personal Life:
George Arthur Maurice Hamilton-Gordon died in April 1957 at the age of 86. He did not marry, and upon his death, the barony became extinct.

He is referenced in the historian Michael Bloch’s book "Closet Queens" as a "homosexual bachelor."
