Introduction
Sawako Konoe (born July 16, 1869 (August 23, Meiji 2) – October 20, 1891, Meiji 24), was a woman who lived during the Meiji era and the mother of Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe.
There are no records regarding her birthplace or specific location, but she was born as the fifth daughter of the last lord of the Kaga Domain, Maeda Keihime. Her father, Maeda Keihime, is a notable figure who left a mark in history as a feudal lord. Her mother was a concubine, known by the pen name Fuden (Tosei-in), and was the daughter of vassal Kuda Masanobu.
Sawako Konoe later married Duke Atsumaro Konoe, through whom she acquired noble status. She and Atsumaro had a son, Fumimaro Konoe, who would later play an important role in Japanese politics.
However, Sawako's health was poor after childbirth, and she died shortly after giving birth. Her death occurred in 1891, when she was only 22 years old.
After her death, her remaining son Fumimaro was raised by Tsune Koed, who was Atsumaro's half-sister and, later, his adoptive mother. Tsune was related through Atsumaro’s polygamous marriage, and she was brought up as Fumimaro's stepmother, although their relationship was reportedly not very harmonious.
Additionally, her early death and the upbringing environment provided by her stepmother are believed to have significantly influenced the character and life of young Fumimaro Konoe.
Though her life was brief, her presence occupies an important place in her family’s history. There are few detailed records about her, mainly limited to her familial relations and the dates of her birth and death.
