Introduction
Edward Hyde was born in 1645 and was baptized on April 1 of that year. He was the third son of Edward Hyde, the 1st Earl of Clarendon. Hyde received his education at Christ Church, Oxford, and subsequently studied at the Middle Temple, one of the four Inns of Court in London.
In 1664, at the age of nineteen, Hyde was elected to the House of Commons of England as a Member of Parliament for Salisbury. His election was conducted on the nomination of his father, who served as the High Steward of Salisbury. Hyde’s political career was brief, as he died the following year, in 1665, on January 10.
