Liu Yunruo, the second son of Liu Shaoqi and his first wife He Baozhen, began wandering after his mother was executed at Yuhuatai in Nanjing in 1933. In 1946, he returned to Yan'an and studied successively at Yan'an Nursery School, Yan'an Middle School, Helong Middle School, and the Border Area Combined Middle School. In 1949, he entered Beiping No. 101 Middle School. After graduating from Beijing No. 4 Middle School in 1954, he was dispatched by the state to study abroad at Moscow Aviation Institute in the Soviet Union, specializing in missile design. In 1955, he received multiple encouraging letters from his father, Liu Shaoqi.

In 1960, he returned to China and worked on missile design at the Seventh Machine Department. In 1964, he responded to his father's request and joined the People's Liberation Army, becoming a member of the Chinese Communist Party. In 1965, he participated in the "Four Clean-ups" campaign; in 1966, he returned to the Seventh Machine Department. During the Cultural Revolution, he was persecuted; he was imprisoned in 1967 and released in 1974. He passed away in Beijing in 1977 due to illness.
