Introduction

Chen Zhizhong, male, Han ethnicity, was born on January 22, 1979, in California, United States. His family members include his father, Chen Shui-bian, who served as the leader of Taiwan, his mother, Wu Shuzhen, his wife, Huang Rui-liang, his sister, Chen Xingyu, and his eldest daughter, Chen Jie-xin. His educational background includes graduating in 1997 from Taipei Municipal Chenggong Senior High School, the same year he was admitted to the Judicial Department of Taiwan University’s Law and Law Enforcement Division, from which he graduated in 2001. After completing his studies, Chen Zhizhong served as a “military law reserve officer.” In 2001, he furthered his studies in the United States and earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of California, Berkeley. In 2005, he married Huang Rui-liang, a master pianist from Taipei University of the Arts; after marriage, the couple furthered their studies in New York. That same year, he enrolled at Columbia University for further studies, and in May 2006, he obtained a second master's degree in law from New York University. In 2007, his eldest daughter, Chen Jie-xin, was born.

During his career, Chen Zhizhong joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) along with his wife in January 2006. That year, he planned to pursue a PhD in law at the University of Virginia, but the plan was discontinued due to investigations into his family’s money laundering case. In 2008, his family’s money laundering case was scrutinized; Chen Zhizhong was accused of involvement in money laundering and was subsequently sentenced to one year for perjury. Although his sentence was reduced by six months, he did not serve prison time and was granted permission for community service.

His political career continued to advance, and he was elected as a Kaohsiung City Councilor at the end of 2010 with a high vote count. However, in 2012, he lost the election when he ran as a Democratic Progressive Party candidate for Taiwan’s Ninth Legislative District representative in Kaohsiung. Subsequently, in 2013, he applied to restore his party membership and was finally reinstated. Reports indicate that during investigations related to his family’s money laundering case, Chen Zhizhong was not dismissed from his positions and traveled abroad multiple times, involving offshore accounts. During interrogations and court hearings pertaining to legal cases, he repeatedly pleaded guilty, cooperated with investigations, and demonstrated a certain degree of compliance.

On a personal level, Chen Zhizhong has also been involved in academic and cultural activities, having won first place in a Taiwanese essay competition. As the eldest son of Chen Shui-bian, his family background holds significant influence in political and legal circles. The public record of Chen Zhizhong’s activities encompasses aspects related to politics, law, finance, and personal life, reflecting a complex family background and career trajectory.
