Introduction
George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney, was a British statesman, colonial administrator, and diplomat who lived from 1737 to 1806. He was the son of George Macartney and the husband of Jane Stuart. Jane Stuart, who died in 1828, was the daughter of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, a British nobleman, art collector, and former Prime Minister of Great Britain.
