Introduction

Xu Tenghe, commonly known by the English name Peter Xu, has long been kept relatively confidential within the Evergrande Group in China. Reports indicate that just before the Spring Festival in 2016, internal Evergrande appointment documents named Peter Xu as Chairman of the Pearl River Delta Company; the use of his English name on formal documents was rare within the Evergrande Group. Internal staff largely learned of his identity through word of mouth, and information related to the Xu family is not widely disclosed within the group.

Career-wise, Xu Tenghe had long held management positions within the Evergrande Group, including Chairman of the Pearl River Delta Company, and he led matters related to Evergrande Wealth. Many of his responsibilities within the Evergrande system were at the management level. In December 2021, foreign media reported that his Los Angeles luxury residence was sold at a discounted price of $12.5 million. On September 28, 2023, The Daily Economic News reported that Xu Tenghe had been taken away for investigation.

Family relations: Xu Tenghe’s father is Evergrande Group founder Xu Jiayin; his mother is Ding Yumei, and his brother is Xu Zhijian. His grandfather is Xu Xiangao, and his paternal uncle is Xu Jiaqin.

Significant event: On February 26, 2024, Ding Yumei, the former wife of Evergrande founder Xu Jiayin, filed a lawsuit with the Hong Kong High Court against Xu Tenghe, seeking more than HK$1 billion in total. The complaint is based on a loan agreement signed on June 16, 2020, under which the defendant allegedly failed to repay on time. The plaintiff requests HK$732.48 million, comprising HK$500 million principal, HK$45 million interest, and HK$180,000 in daily late charges; in addition, it involves a USD portion totaling about USD 40.97 million, including USD 30 million principal, USD 2.7 million interest, and USD 8.27 million in daily late charges. The complaint also sets out the USD and HKD amounts and related details.
