Introduction
Takiko Naishinnō (September 24, 1897 – January 11, 1899) was a Japanese imperial princess. She was the tenth daughter of Emperor Meiji (the 15th child), and her mother was Son Shōko. She was a half-sister of Emperor Taishō, an aunt of Emperor Shōwa (Shōwa Tennō), an great-aunt of the current Emperor (Emperor Naruhito), and a great-great-aunt of the present Emperor.
Life
She was born on September 24, 1897 (Meiji 30) as the tenth imperial princess of Emperor Meiji and Son Shōko. Her mother, Son Shōko, served as a noble Lady of the Imperial Family. For her upbringing, Shōhōi Tadashige was appointed as her guardian, and his wife, Miwa, also served at the Teigū (Imperial Palace). She was raised at the Teigū residence within Aoyama Imperial Villa.
In her childhood, she was frail and ill. On January 11, 1899 (Meiji 32), she passed away at the age of one year (by East Asian reckoning, three years old) due to meningitis. After her death, her belongings were donated by Tadashige to Hofu Tenmangu Shrine. In October of the same year, a memorial shrine called Teigū Reihai-sho (a memorial site for her spirit) was established to commemorate the donation of her belongings.
Since then, her remains and memorial events have been held annually on January 11 as a Reihai ceremony (a memorial service).
