Introduction

Francis North, 2nd Baron Guilford, was born on 14 December 1673 and died on 17 October 1729. He was a British politician and member of the peerage.

North matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford, during his education. In 1685, he succeeded his father, Francis North, as the 2nd Baron Guilford.

In the political arena, North was notable for his stance during the debate over the Act of Settlement. In 1701, he was one of five peers of the realm who voted against the Act, which resulted in the exclusion of the House of Stuart from the English throne. He and the other peers expressed their opposition through written protests documented in the House of Lords Journal.

Between 1703 and 1705, Guilford served as Lord Lieutenant of Essex. He was appointed to the Privy Council in 1712. Subsequently, he held the position of First Lord of Trade from 1713 to 1714.

Regarding his family, North was married twice. His first marriage was in 1695 to Elizabeth, the daughter of Fulke Greville, 5th Baron Brooke, and Sarah Dashwood. Around 1703, he married his second wife, Alicia Brownlow, daughter of Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet, and Alice Sherard.

His son from his second marriage, Francis North, succeeded him as the 3rd Baron Guilford and was later granted the title of 1st Earl of Guilford.
