Introduction
Li Ping is the only son of Li Xiannian, and he grew up under strict family discipline. His eldest sister, Li Jin, was born to Li Xiannian’s former wife, Shang Xiaoping. After 1949, Li Xiannian married Lin Jiamei, and they had three children: Li Ziyang, Li Ping, and Li Xiaolin. As the only male in the family, Li Ping was subjected to particularly strict upbringing, and he once admitted that he felt a deep sense of fear toward his father and dared not make mistakes. In adulthood, in order to carry on his parents’ cause, Li Ping voluntarily chose a military career, devoting his youth and ideals to the nation. Through his own efforts, he rose to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Beijing Military Region and was awarded the rank of Major General by the Central Military Commission. In a time of peace, this was already the fullest expression of his dedication and responsibility to both his family and his country.
