Introduction
George Gordon, Lord Haddo (28 January 1764 – 2 October 1791), was a Scottish Freemason and the eldest son of George Gordon, 3rd Earl of Aberdeen. Born in Scotland, he was involved in Freemasonry and served as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland from 1784 to 1786. During his tenure, he laid the foundation stone of South Bridge in Edinburgh on 1 August 1785.
On 18 June 1782, Haddo married Charlotte Baird, who died on 8 October 1795. Charlotte Baird was a sister of Sir David Baird, Bt. Together, they had seven children:
1. Hon. George Hamilton-Gordon (1784–1860), who later became the 4th Earl of Aberdeen and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1852 to 1855.
2. Hon. William Gordon (1784–1858), a politician and vice-admiral.
3. Hon. Sir Alexander Gordon (1786–1815), a lieutenant-colonel who was killed at the Battle of Waterloo.
4. Lady Alice Gordon (1787–1847), who was granted the rank of an earl's daughter in 1813, served as Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Sophia of Gloucester, and died unmarried.
5. Hon. Charles Gordon (1790–1835), a soldier.
6. Hon. Sir Robert Gordon (1791–1847), a diplomat.
7. Hon. Sir John Gordon (1792–1869), a naval officer.
George Gordon, Lord Haddo, predeceased his father in 1791, passing away at the age of 27. Upon the death of the 3rd Earl of Aberdeen in 1801, the earldom was inherited by his eldest son, George Gordon, the future 4th Earl of Aberdeen.
In addition to his familial and Masonic activities, Haddo's name is commemorated in the peaks of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, where Haddo Peak was named in his honor.
