Introduction

Shizuko Kuni (born September 25, 1884 – died September 27, 1959) was a former member of the Japanese Imperial Family. During her time as a royal, her status was that of Princess Takako; after her departure from the Imperial Family, she was known as Kuni. Accordingly, her honorific at that time was "Her Highness."

Life and family background

Shizuko Kuni was born as the eldest daughter of Viscount Tadusuke Miminase. Her mother was Tomiko, the daughter of Moritake Higashizono, and her siblings include Tadamasa Miminase. In 1907 (Meiji 40), she married Takako, the fifth son of Prince Asaka. During her time as a princess, she was known as Princess Takako Shizuko. She later bore three sons and three daughters, including Princess Higo, Prince Yahiko, Princess Hokuko, Princess Kuni, Prince Yashihiko, and Prince Tokuhiko.

Marriage and children

Through her marriage to Prince Takako, she became Princess Takako Shizuko. Her children included both sons and daughters, all of whom carried Imperial lineage and were recognized as members of the Imperial Family at that time.

Activities as a member of the Imperial Family

During her tenure as a member of the Imperial Family, she was addressed as Princess Takako and was referred to with the honorific "His Highness." Her separation from Prince Takako occurred in 1937 (Showa 12).

Leaving the Imperial Family and subsequent activities

On October 14, 1947 (Showa 22), based on Article 11, Paragraph 1 of the Imperial House Law, she withdrew her Imperial status and thereafter used the name "Shizuko Kuni." After her departure, she established a dressmaking school called "Kuni Dressmaking School" in Kawaramachi Arakami, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City. The school was founded with the purpose of providing dressmaking education for women.

Death

Shizuko Kuni passed away in 1959 (Showa 34) at the age of 75.
