Introduction
Princess Kōko (Kōko Joō, born December 5, 1913 – June 27, 1918) was a member of the Japanese Imperial Family during the Taishō era.
Life
She was born on December 5, 1913, as the second daughter of Takami-no-miya Takahito, Prince Kuni, and his wife, Princess Shizuko. She was named "Kōko" on the night of her seventh day, December 11.
On the evening of June 17, 1918, after dinner, she exhibited symptoms involving vomiting. Initially diagnosed with gastroenteritis, she seemed to temporarily improve; however, by June 24, vomiting and edema appeared, and it was revealed that she was suffering from nephritis. Her condition did not improve thereafter. At 1:45 p.m. on June 27, she fell into a critical state and died at 3:40 p.m.
She was four years old at the time, six years old in calendar years. At her death, her elder brother, Prince Kahiko, had already passed away, so her death occurred just nine days after his.
Her funeral was held on July 3 of the same year at a cemetery located at the site of the former Hōan-ji Temple in Ima-Kumano-chō, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City (present-day Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City).
