Introduction

Arthur Hill-Trevor, 1st Viscount Dungannon (circa 1694 – 30 January 1771), was an Irish politician and peer. He was born as Arthur Hill, the second son of Michael Hill of Hillsborough, who was a Member of Parliament and a Privy Councillor, and his wife Anne Trevor. His maternal grandfather was Sir John Trevor, a prominent seventeenth-century Irish and English statesman. Arthur Hill-Trevor's elder brother was Trevor Hill, who became the 1st Viscount Hillsborough and was the father of the 1st Marquess of Downshire. Arthur Hill-Trevor was also the grandfather of Arthur Wellesley, who became the 1st Duke of Wellington.

He began his political career in the Irish House of Commons, representing Hillsborough from November 1715. In 1727, he was elected to represent County Down. On 17 February 1766, he was elevated to the Irish House of Lords upon being created Viscount Dungannon and Baron Hill of Olderfleet, titles within the Peerage of Ireland.

He served as High Sheriff of Down in 1736 and was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland on 13 August 1750.

Regarding his personal life, Arthur Hill-Trevor was married twice. His first wife was Barbara Deane of Crumlin, Dublin, the daughter of Joseph Deane, who was Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer. Barbara died young. In 1737, Hill-Trevor married secondly Anne Stafford of Brownstown, County Meath, with whom he entered into a marriage settlement dated 11 January 1737/8. Together, they had three children. Their only son predeceased Arthur Hill-Trevor, and consequently, the viscountcy was inherited by their grandson, Arthur Hill-Trevor, 2nd Viscount Dungannon.

His children with Anne Stafford included:

- Hon. Arthur Hill Trevor (24 December 1738 – 19 June 1770), who married the Hon. Letitia Morres, daughter of Hervey Morres, 1st Viscount Mountmorres, and Lady Letitia Ponsonby.

- Hon. Anne Hill-Trevor (23 June 1742 – 10 September 1831), who married Garret Wesley, 1st Earl of Mornington, son of Richard Wesley, 1st Baron Mornington, and Elizabeth Sale. She was the mother of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, and Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley.

- Hon. Prudence Penelope Hill-Trevor (born 17 March 1745), who married Charles Powell Leslie (1731–1800), son of Robert Leslie and Frances Rogerson.

Arthur Hill-Trevor’s ancestry includes his father Michael Hill and mother Anne Trevor, connecting him to notable Irish political and social families. His familial ties and titles contributed to his role in Irish political life during the 18th century.
