Introduction

Michael Hill was born on 7 August 1672 and died in 1699. He was a political figure in both England and Ireland during the late 17th century. Hill was the son of William Hill of Hillsborough and Eleanor Boyle, who was the daughter of Archbishop Michael Boyle.

Hill served as a Member of Parliament for Saltash in the English House of Commons from 1692 to 1695. Following this, he was a member of the Irish House of Commons for Hillsborough from 1695 until his death in 1699. In addition to his parliamentary roles, he held positions as Governor and Custos Rotulorum of County Down. He was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland in 1694.

In 1690, Michael Hill married Anne Trevor, the daughter of Sir John Trevor. The couple had three children: two sons and one daughter. Their eldest son and heir was Trevor Hill, who was later created Viscount Hillsborough. Through his second son, Arthur Hill-Trevor, who became the 1st Viscount Dungannon, Michael Hill was a direct ancestor of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington.

References for this biographical information include Stuart Handley's 2002 entry in "The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1690-1715," which details Hill's life and political career.
