Introduction

Calvin Fillmore was born on December 12, 1775, in Bennington County, Vermont. His father was Nathaniel Fillmore Sr., a farmer and officer in the Green Mountain Boys, and a veteran of the American Revolution. Calvin was educated in Bennington and subsequently became a farmer.

In 1798, Calvin Fillmore married Jerusha Turner, who died in 1852. The same year, he relocated with his brother Nathaniel Fillmore and their families from Bennington County to an area then part of Onondaga County, New York, now situated in Summerhill, Cayuga County. Later, the family moved to Montville in the Town of Sempronius, which is presently part of Moravia, and subsequently settled in East Aurora, Erie County.

During the War of 1812, Calvin Fillmore was appointed as a captain in the 13th Infantry Regiment of the New York Militia. He participated in several battles in upstate New York and Canada. He was promoted to the ranks of major and then lieutenant colonel, eventually commanding the regiment before the conclusion of the war. He later served as lieutenant colonel of the militia's 17th Regiment.

In addition to farming, Fillmore engaged in various business activities, including operating a tavern and hotel, owning a sawmill, and participating in other commercial ventures. He was an original incorporator of the Aurora and Buffalo Railroad, contributing to the development of local transportation infrastructure.

Calvin Fillmore held public office in Erie County, serving as coroner and functioning as a deputy U.S. marshal. He was elected as a member of the New York State Assembly representing Erie County in 1825 as a Democratic-Republican. Over time, he became active in the Democratic Party.

He died on October 22, 1865, in East Aurora, New York. He was buried at the East Aurora Cemetery.

Calvin Fillmore was the uncle of Millard Fillmore, who became the 13th President of the United States.
