Introduction

James Du Pre Alexander, the 3rd Earl of Caledon, was born on July 27, 1812, and died on June 30, 1855. He was known by the courtesy title Viscount Alexander until 1839. His parentage includes his father, the 2nd Earl of Caledon, and Lady Catherine Yorke. His place of birth was London.

In terms of education, Alexander attended Eton College from 1824 to 1828. Following his studies at Eton, he matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford.

Alexander's career in public service began with his appointment as High Sheriff of Armagh in 1836. He served as a Member of Parliament representing Tyrone from 1837 until 1839. On April 8, 1839, he succeeded his father as the Earl of Caledon, upon the latter's death. Subsequently, in 1841, he was elected as a Representative Peer for Ireland to the House of Lords.

His military service included attaining the rank of captain in the Coldstream Guards. He also held the position of Colonel of the Royal Tyrone Militia starting from May 1, 1839, a role he held until his death, succeeding his father.

Alexander was married on September 4, 1845, at St. Michael's, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, to Lady Jane Frederica Harriot Mary Grimston. She was the daughter of James Grimston, 1st Earl of Verulam, and Lady Charlotte Jenkinson. The couple had four children:

- James Alexander, who became the 4th Earl of Caledon (1846–1898). He married Lady Elizabeth Graham-Toler, daughter of Hector Graham-Toler, 3rd Earl of Norbury.

- Honorable Walter Philip Alexander (1849–1934), a lieutenant-colonel in the 2nd Dragoons. He served during the Second Boer War (1899–1900) and married Margaret Katherine Grimston, daughter of Reverend the Honorable Francis Grimston, a son of the 1st Earl of Verulam.

- Lady Jane Charlotte Elizabeth Alexander (1850–1941), who married Captain Edmund Barker Van Koughnet, son of the former Chancellor of Ontario, Hon. Philip Michael Matthew Scott VanKoughnet.

- Honorable Charles Alexander (1854–1909), a major in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He married Kate Stayner, daughter of Charles Stayner of Halifax, in 1880.

James Du Pre Alexander, 3rd Earl of Caledon, died at the age of 42 at his residence in Carlton House Terrace, London, and was interred at Caledon in County Tyrone, Ireland. His wife, Lady Caledon, died on March 30, 1888.
