Rodin, born in Chengdu, Sichuan in 1939, entered the Beijing Film Academy’s Photography Department in 1958 and graduated in 1962, then worked at Beijing Film Studio. He began working as an independent cinematographer in 1974, with notable works including "Breakup" and "Saler Maoke." In 1980, he was the director of photography for the film "The Wild," earning the Best Story Film at the Hundred Flowers Awards with his superb skills and gaining international recognition. In 1982, he shot the Sino-Japanese co-production "A Game of No End," which won a Special Award at the Golden Rooster Awards; in 1983, he directed and photographed the adaptation of Ba Jin’s "Cold Night," depicting the lives of Chongqing citizens during the anti-Japanese war, receiving widespread acclaim. His other works include documentaries such as "When the Stars First Shine" and "Autumn Light and Sports Talk." In the late 1980s, he moved to Hong Kong, abandoned his art career to go into business, and left the Chinese film industry. His family members include his grandfather Qian Zhuangfei, his father Luo Jingyu, his mother Li Lili, his wife Ye Xiangzhen, and his sister Luo Xiaoling. On December 19, 2022, Rodin passed away in Beijing due to illness at the age of 83.
