Introduction

Arabella Stewart, Countess of Galloway (26 April 1850 – 18 August 1903), was born Lady Mary Arabella Arthur Cecil. She was the daughter of James Brownlow William Gascoyne-Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Salisbury, and his second wife, Lady Mary Catherine Sackville-West. Her paternal lineage linked her to the Gascoyne-Cecil family, a noble family prominent in British aristocracy, and her maternal lineage connected her to the Sackville-West family.

Her family included several notable figures. Her older half-brother, Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, became the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during two terms, from 1886 to 1892 and from 1895 to 1902.

On 25 January 1872, she married Alan Stewart, who at the time was styled Lord Garlies. The marriage occurred approximately one year before he succeeded to his father's titles as the Earl of Galloway. At the time of their marriage, Alan Stewart served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire, representing the same political party as his brother-in-law, the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury.

There were no children born from the marriage of Arabella Stewart and Alan Stewart. Following his death in 1901 at the age of 65, the earldom was inherited by his brother, Randolph Henry Stewart, who became the 11th Earl of Galloway.

A photographic portrait of Arabella Stewart, captured during the 1870s by John Watkins, is preserved by the National Gallery in London. The portrait provides a visual record of her appearance during her lifetime.

During her later years, she maintained a residence in London at 17 Upper Grosvenor Street. She died at the estate called "Cuffnells," located in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, from pneumonia. Her age at the time of death was 53 years.
