Introduction
Seth Chase Taft was born on December 31, 1922, and passed away on April 14, 2013. He was an American lawyer and a member of the Republican Party. Taft was a grandson of William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States and the 10th Chief Justice of the United States.
Taft's paternal grandfather was President William Howard Taft. His parents were Charles Phelps Taft II, who served as the mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Eleanor Chase Taft. Eleanor's father was associated with the Waterbury Clock Company. Seth Chase Taft was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, alongside five sisters and one brother.
In 1943, Seth Chase Taft married Frances Martha "Franny" Prindle, who was from New Haven, Connecticut.
Throughout his career, Taft participated in various political campaigns and held public service positions. In 1962, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Ohio Senate. In 1967, he sought election as the mayor of Cleveland but was defeated by Democratic candidate Carl B. Stokes, who became the first African American mayor of a major U.S. city.
In 1982, Taft aimed for the Republican nomination for governor of Ohio but lost in the primary to Clarence J. "Bud" Brown Jr. He served as a Cuyahoga County Commissioner from 1971 to 1978.
Seth and Franny Taft had four children: three sons named Frederick I. Taft, Thomas P. Taft, and Seth T. Taft, along with a daughter named Cynthia Taft.
Taft died at the age of 90 in his home in Pepper Pike, Ohio, after experiencing a fall. His wife, Franny, died four years later at the age of 95. Both are buried at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. They are survived by their four children, ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
