Introduction

Leopold Guy Francis Maynard Greville, the 6th Earl of Warwick, was born on 10 September 1882. He was the son of Francis Greville, the 5th Earl of Warwick, and Daisy Maynard. It is believed that he was the only child of Lady Warwick fathered by her husband, the 5th Earl. Greville received his education at Eton College; however, he eventually left school voluntarily, reportedly selling his fur coat and gun to finance his journey to join the Second Boer War. He inherited the title of Earl of Warwick in January 1924 following the death of his father.

In his military career, Greville served as a second lieutenant in the 7th (Militia) Battalion of The King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was seconded for service with a line battalion in March 1900 during the Second Boer War (1899–1901). On 3 November 1900, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant in the Life Guards. Starting in August 1901, he served as aide-de-camp to Lord Milner, the High Commissioner for South Africa, a position he held until the end of the war in 1902. During the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), Greville served as a Reuters correspondent.

In 1907, he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Inspector-General of the Forces. He received the Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) in 1905. During the First World War, Greville served as aide-de-camp to the commanding general of the British Expeditionary Force from 1914 to 1915. Later that year, he was promoted to brigadier general and commanded the 4th and subsequently the 12th Canadian Infantry Brigades until he was wounded on 12 September 1916. After recovering from his injury, he served with the Canadian Mission in Paris.

Greville died on 31 January 1928 at a nursing home in Hove.

In his personal life, Greville married Elfrida Marjorie Eden on 29 April 1909. She was born in 1887 and died in 1943, and was the only daughter of Sir William Eden, 7th Baronet, and Sybil Frances Grey, daughter of Sir William Grey KCSI by his second wife. Leopold and Elfrida had three sons: Charles Guy Fulke Greville, who became the 7th Earl of Warwick (1911–1984); Richard Francis Maynard Greville (1913–1968), who served as a governor of University College Hospital from 1952 to 1968; and John Ambrose Henry Greville (1918–1942), who was killed in action during World War II.

Following his husband's death, Lady Warwick served as Mayor of Warwick in 1929, 1930, and 1931. She died on 10 February 1943. Her brother was Anthony Eden, who later became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and was also Warwick’s Member of Parliament.

Among Greville's authored works is "An Eye-witness in Manchuria," published in 1905 by E. Nash, London.
