Introduction

Gertrude Pierrepont, Countess of Kingston-upon-Hull (29 September 1580 – 1649), was an English noblewoman and peeress. She was born Gertrude Talbot, the elder daughter and co-heir of the Honourable Henry Talbot and his wife, Elizabeth Reyner. Henry Talbin was a younger son of George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury.

Gertrude Talbot married Robert Pierrepont at Kinwalton Church on 8 January 1601. Robert Pierrepont was elevated to the peerage as Viscount in 1627 and later as Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull in 1628.

They had several children, including:

- Henry Pierrepont, who became the 1st Marquess of Dorchester (1606–1680). He married twice; first to Cecilia Bayning, with whom he had children, and second to Lady Catherine Stanley Francis Pierrepont (died 1658 or 1659). Lady Catherine married Elizabeth Bray and had children.

- William Pierrepont (born 1607/8, died 1679), who married Elizabeth Harries and had children, including Gervas Pierrepont. Gervas was noted as responsible for his mother's monument and died unmarried.

- Lady Elizabeth Pierrepont, who died unmarried.

- Lady Frances Pierrepont (born 1615), who married Philip Rolleston and had children, including George Pierrepont. George married and had children, one of whom, Mary, died in infancy.

Robert Pierrepont, the Earl of Kingston, was killed in 1643 during the English Civil War by friendly fire while fighting for King Charles I. In 1645, their eldest son Henry was created the Marquess of Dorchester.

The countess died in 1649 at the age of 68. A memorial was erected by her son at St Edmund's Church, Holme Pierrepont, near the family estate. The memorial describes her as "replete with all the qualities that adorn her sex; and more eminent in them than in the greatness of her birth."
