Introduction
Xie Yanggong, born in the 1960s (exact year unknown), is a native of Zhongjiang County, Deyang City, Sichuan Province, China. He graduated from a higher arts institution within Sichuan Province, majoring in performing and creating quyi (a traditional Chinese performing art). Details about his family background and early education have not been publicly disclosed.
He has been engaged in quyi performance for over 40 years. He studied systematically under the renowned comic actor Wang Yonguo, learning various forms of quyi such as xié剧 (comic skits), xiaopin (short sketches), and jīnqiánbǎn (a storytelling style involving rhythmic speech). His artistic career began in the late 20th century, gradually gaining recognition in the Deyang area. In October 2002, during the "Rural Arts Tuning" event held in Deyang City, his short sketch "Welcoming the 16th Congress," created in collaboration with Li Changhua, won first prize.
In 2003, his kuaiban (bamboo clapper) work "United in Fighting SARS" was recorded and broadcast on Deyang Radio and Television Station and also aired on the Sichuan Arts Channel. In 2004, at the "Jiannan Cup" Drama, Sketch, and Quyi Grand Prix in Deyang, Xie Yanggong's kuaiban piece "Bragging About Zhongjiang" won second prize. That same year, his work "In that Place Where Pear Blossoms Bloom" received the second prize at the "Second Sichuan Province Drama and Sketch Creation Competition." Additionally, his collaborative sketch "In that Place Where Pear Blossoms Bloom," performed together with Zhao Yihua, Huang Xiaobo, and Li Changhua, was awarded first prize at the "Mass Audience Sichuan Opera and Quyi Sketch Invitational" held in Jianan Town, Deyang.
In 2005, his sketch "Zhongjiang Old Fellow," performed jointly with Li Changhua, won a silver medal at the second Rural Arts Tuning in Deyang. In 2006, his work "Reception" earned third place in the third Sichuan Provincial Drama and Sketch Creation Competition. That year, at the "Seeking Old Friend" contest organized by Chengdu Television, his collaborative sketch "Fields of Hope," created with Yao Feng and Yuan Jing, received the Best Program Award.
On October 18, 2013, the Huaxi Metropolitan Daily and the Zhongjiang County Sports and Culture Bureau jointly held a commemorative performance at the Zhongjiang County Gymnasium to mark Xie Yanggong’s 40 years of engagement in quyi arts. That same year, he also participated with the revised xié剧 "The Crooked Goods Going to the Countryside March" in the 3rd Bashu Comedian Arena. Over his career, Xie Yanggong has received numerous awards, including first place in 2020 in the "Hometown Dialect Promotion Ambassador" activity.
In terms of personal life, Xie Yanggong and his wife have always resided in his hometown of Zhongjiang County, Deyang City. His daughter is Xie Na, and his son-in-law is Zhang Jie.
